Verbier, in Switzerland's Valais, is the gateway to the vast Four Valleys — steep off-piste, sunny terraces and a legendary après-ski scene at the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Verbier grew from scattered Valais farmsteads into a ski resort from the 1920s, and by the 1960s its lifts across the Four Valleys had made it one of the great destinations of the Alps.
Skiers love Verbier for its serious off-piste and the steep couloirs off Mont Fort, its sun-drenched terraces, and an après-ski scene as famous as the skiing itself.
Verbier sits at around 1,500m in the Swiss canton of Valais, above the Rhône valley, forming the largest sector of the 4 Vallées — over 400km of linked runs.
The Mont Fort glacier, the neighbouring resorts of Nendaz and Veysonnaz, and the historic town of Martigny are all within easy reach.
We chose Verbier for the drama of its terrain — the ridgelines, couloirs and glacier all read beautifully as a layered contour map.
