Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and is considered the birthplace of alpinism, drawing climbers and skiers beneath Mont Blanc for over two centuries.

Chamonix sits at 1,035m in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak at 4,806m, near the Swiss and Italian borders.
The Aiguille du Midi cable car, the Mer de Glace glacier, and the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur in Italy are all close by.
